of cancer risk
in Oncogenetics

The Regional Cancer Screening Coordination Center - Corsica, in conjunction with the Paoli Calmettes Institute, organizes an oncogenetics consultation in Bastia, Corté and Ajaccio throughout the year. The dedicated service is called CERCA, (Cancer Risk Assessment Consultation).
People are referred to this consultation when the hypothesis of a genetic risk of cancer is formulated by a doctor based on personal or family history.
When a genetic predisposition to cancer is present, the person carrying the mutation presents a higher risk than the general population but may also never develop cancer:
“It is the risk that is transmitted and not the cancer. There are certainly cancers where heredity plays an important role, but there is no hereditary cancer per se. No one is fully protected; but likewise, no one is condemned to get cancer,”
says François Eisinger.
How to make an appointment?

You are followed for cancer. Your file has probably been submitted to a multidisciplinary consultation meeting for joint decision-making between the oncologist and the specialists who treated you. This meeting makes it possible to take stock of the people eligible for a consultation with an oncogeneticist. You are unscathed and you are wondering about a family risk of cancer because of cases of cancer in your family. Ask your GP to calculate your Eisinger score. He will be able to tell you if you are eligible for an oncogenetics consultation.
Why can't you make an appointment directly with an oncogeneticist?
Cases of cancer associated with a genetic mutation remain rare. The care pathway offers this consultation to people with cancer for whom certain elements may suggest a family risk (type of tumour, age, number of family cases). Despite this selection, it takes a long time to see an oncogeneticist.

Professor Eisinger performs his Cs 5 to 6 weeks a year in Ajaccio.
